Since September 2009 we have held a number of successful events with war veterans, and are now extending our activities to the wider community, specifically Cornish residents aged 50+. This opportunity is supported by Cornwall Works 50+ and Cornwall Works 50+ Cares funded by the European Social Fund. Run by Inclusion Cornwall this project engages with people over the age of 50 possibly suffering from stress or depression, who would benefit from motivational activity to stay in or progress into the labour market, including veterans. Surf Action achieve this through participating in a peer group activity that is both physically and mentally challenging and perceived as a young person’s sporting activity – surfing. The project delivers surf activity days and anyone interested can join us on Friday afternoon at 12.30pm at Sunset Surf Cafe, Gwithian Beach nr Hayle, nr St Ives. Our locations are dependent on weather and wave conditions and therefore we will use the North Coast and South Coasts of Cornwall, however, we primarily operate from Gwithian Beach. Our programme is aimed at offering social groups, clubs, individuals and friends the opportunity to come to the beach and find out what an exhilarating and positive experience surfing can be. Surf action is a means to feeling positive and healthy. Many people can be frightened by the size of the waves, the cold water or feel, as many beginners do, intimidated. Surf Action promises to take all these fears and make you feel comfortable and safe and introduce yourself and friends to an activity that is healthy, exciting and above all social. There is nothing better than coming to the beach with your friends. |
